What are varicose veins?

Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are these enlarged veins that are near the skin’s surface. They often appear like dark veins that sometimes even bulge through your skin. They can be very painful and can be displeasing to the eye.

Often found in legs, calves, ankles, and feet, varicose veins can cause heaviness, aching, tiredness, swelling, and even itching over the areas they are present.

What causes varicose veins?

Weakened veins are the most common cause of varicose veins. Your veins get weakened whenever you are in a position where your blood circulation is affected.

One example is when you cross your legs. Crossing your legs cut off the circulation of blood to your legs, therefore making veins in your legs weak, large, and twisted.

Other causes of varicose veins purely lie in genetics and aging since veins naturally get weak as we age.

Essential Oil Treatments for Varicose Veins

Fortunately, there’s an easy way to remove and soothe those pesky varicose veins. You can use several types of essential oils to effectively treat your varicose veins.

Some essential oils you can use are yarrow, cypress, rosemary, sage, rose, cedar wood, peppermint, frankincense, neroli, geranium, myrrh, ginger, lemon, and juniper. These essential oils can help remove varicose veins in your legs, calves, ankles, and feet because they promote good blood circulation.

There are also several ways you can apply these essential oils to your body. Here are some methods you can easily try at home:

Warm and Cool Compress

Whenever your legs, calves, ankles, or feet are feeling discomfort, you can easily soothe the pain caused by your varicose veins through a warm and cool compress. For a warm compress, you may mix 1 liter of warm water with 5 drops of essential oil and use a cloth to soak up the water for the compress.

After applying the warm compress to the affected area, you should follow up with a cool compress. The last thing you should do is elevate your legs for 15 minutes to increase blood circulation.

Massage

If you want to treat and soothe your varicose veins real quick, you may opt for an essential oil massage instead. Simply mix 21 to 30 drops of essential oil with a 50ml carrier oil or cream.

Once you have your essential oil mixture, you should gently massage your varicose veins with strokes that go upward to the heart at least twice a day to improve blood circulation.

Warm Bath

If you have a nice bathtub at home, you may try mixing a few drops of essential oil into your bath water. Simply mix some essential oil with a carrier oil and add about 8 drops of your mixture to warm bath water.

How to Prevent Varicose Veins

Varicose vein prevention lies in improving blood circulation and muscle tone. To reduce your risk of varicose veins, you should:

Be Physically Active

A little exercise can go a long way. Exercise can get your heart pumping a lot of blood all throughout your body. What’s more, is that exercising enhances muscle tone. You don’t even have to do hard exercises, any exercise that will get your heart pumping will do just fine.

Avoid Salty Diets

salty diet

Salty diets can significantly weaken your veins because of water retention which leads to swelling that can put pressure on your veins.

Wear Comfortable Clothes

You should wear clothes that aren’t too tight so that your body’s blood circulation will go unaffected. You should also wear comfortable low-heeled shoes since they are better for your calves and leg veins.

Be Mindful of Your Body Position

Preventing varicose veins is all about enhancing your body’s blood circulation. This means that you should keep moving your limbs to increase blood flow.

Staying in one position for a long period of time can inhibit blood circulation to different parts of your body, which is why you should switch it up every half an hour or so. You should also avoid crossing your legs since it significantly hinders blood circulation to your legs.

The last thing you should try is to elevate your legs above the level of your chest every once in a while to increase blood circulation from your heart to your legs.

A Quick Recap

Varicose veins cannot be completely prevented since our body’s veins naturally get weak over time. But you can always prolong the appearance of varicose veins in your body by keeping your veins healthy by promoting your body’s blood circulation. Aside from being physically active, having a healthy diet, and being mindful of your body position, you can also look to certain essential oils to soothe and treat your varicose veins.
